We recently had a client’s site go down completely. After several phone calls and a lot of head scratching, it was determined that the problem was that the client had simply not verified their recently changed domain contact information.

There had been an email but it had been ignored as “just another email” from the domain registrar—the company who you registered your website address with.

You have 15 days from the time of registering a new or modifying currently existing domain name information to verify the changes. The registrar is required (per ICANN, the internet governing body) to suspend your account if you have not verified this new information within 15 days of the changes.

How can you check if this needs to be done?

If your domain is handled by us, you have nothing to worry about. If not, you’ll need to log into your registrar’s website to be sure. Once logged in, you should be able to see a list of any domains that are registered, and it should show the status of each domain. Look for any indication of there being a need to verify. If you’re not seeing anything, but you are still concerned, you can try searching their site for “ICANN verification” or contacting them directly.

And as always, if you’re still unsure about this, contact us a line at [email protected] or 1-888-440-5728 and we’ll be happy to assist you.

A word of warning.

There are a lot of bad emails out there—spam. And sometimes spam emails will talk about the need to verify information. It is important to know that you only need to verify your domain after there have been changes to domain, so watch for a verification email from your registrar after making changes any changes.

If you’re ever in doubt about an email that you have received regarding domain verification, you can always contact your registrar or NAMI EasySite to ensure that it is legitimate.
